Literary Devices
Tone: Dramatic; Recall the moment in Chapter Thirteen when Lenina forgets to give him a bottle of immunization. The lines states: "Twenty-two years, eight months, and four days from that moment, a promising young Alpha-Minus administrator at Mwanza-Mwanza was to die of trypanosomiasis." Or recall the end of Chapter Three when this line was stated: "Slowly, majestically, with a faint humming of machinery, the Conveyors moved forward, thirty-three centimeters an hour. In the red darkness glinted innumerable rubies." Whoa there. Lighten up!" is where the parody comes in. Brave New World manages to combine dark drama with healthy sprinklings of grinning puns and parodies, like "Thank Ford!" or "Orgy-porgy." Huxley also has a good time with the different taboos of the World State. As readers, we can't help but laugh when students turn pale and feel sick at hearing the word "mother."
visual imagery :is pictured throughout the novel to clearly describe the characters and the scenes. One example of his use of visual imagery is shown in chapter 11 when he describes the appearance of Linda. “Finally–and this was by far the strongest reason for people's not wanting to see poor Linda–there was her appearance."
Personification: “Eternity was in our lips and eyes”. (chapter 18) Here, Huxley personified “eternity”, which is an abstract idea as a living thing to give emphasis to the love and desperation that the Savage was feeling as he was missing his beloved Lenina. In that same chapter, Aldous Huxley also used a hyperbole when Bernard asked the savage if he had eaten something that had made his stomach upset due to his ill-looking face. The Savage responded with “I ate civilization”. Huxley hyperbolized the situation, and by using such a hyperbole he made the scene appear more important. Moreover, although the sentence is short, the meaning of it is sharp and grand.
rhyme: In order to make the sentence appear more appealing to the reader; we provided the following example.
“I am a crowd, obeying as many laws/ As it has members. Chemically impure/ Are all 'my' beings"
